I feel like a lot of might have rolled our eyes at homemade cleaners at some point, or at least I did. I never thought that a homemade all purpose cleaner would be strong enough to clean multiple surfaces all while killing germs and bacteria. After I began doing more research, I found out how wrong I was!
Many DIY all purpose cleaners are just as efficient at killing germs and bacteria as a store brought cleaner. The only difference is that with a homemade natural cleaner you don’t need to worry about toxic chemicals being used in your home!
I’m very frugal and thrifty, so I am always excited to learn that I can make things at home, such as an all purpose cleaner! Before, I was purchasing all purpose cleaner about every 3 weeks because I like to wipe things down pretty often. Now, with this homemade natural all purpose cleaner, I can make it at home for way cheaper! I know for many people this may sound extreme, but it all adds up!
DIY Natural All Purpose Cleaner: What you Need
For this natural all purpose cleaner, you will need:
- Glass Spray Bottle
- 1 C White Vinegar
- 30 drops of ssential Oil(s)
- 1 C Water
I know many people, myself included, hate the smell of vinegar. However, I find that by adding enough essential oil I can hardly smell it. Plus, vinegar is great for cleaning. If you prefer to swap the vinegar for rubbing alcohol, you can do that as well. I have an alternate recipe that doesn’t require vinegar.
Marble & Granite Counter Tops
Vinegar can be damaging to marble and granite counter tops, so you might want to skip the vinegar if you have these in your home. Instead try this recipe:
- 1.5 C Water
- 1/2 C Rubbing Alcohol
- 1 tsp Dish Soap
- 20 drops Essential Oil(s)
I personally make the vinegar recipe just because I don’t have marble or granite counter tops, but both work great and are effective at disinfecting surfaces.
What Essential Oils to Use
There are several essential oils you can choose from, depending on what you prefer. Here is a list of my favorites for cleaning:
- Lemon
- Bergamot
- Lavender
- Cederwood
- Thieves (a blend)
- Orange
- Peppermint
While there are even more options you can choose from, these tend to be my go to oils! Currently, I have been loving thieves because of it’s rich, spicy aroma. Who doesn’t want a great smelling home? Thieves is a blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, and rosemary. It is also found in many natural cleaning products, which is why it’s my favorite to use out of them all! It is a little pricey, however, but considering that it will last you a while it’s totally worth it. Plus you’ll be saving yourself the money from buying a cleaner at the store!
