As a minimalist, I am not a fan of clutter around the house. I even don’t like it when it comes to decorating! Having too much décor in your home can easily start to make your home look cluttered even if it’s done in an organized way.

So over decorating isn’t my thing. However, I still LOVE decorating and being intentional about all my décor items. If you are a minimalist, you might be feeling stuck on how to decorate to still make your house feel, well, “homey”.

So, how can you make you house feel warm and cozy without adding too much clutter? There are some simple ways to get cozy without the clutter. You don’t have to live in a cold, empty house as a minimalist!

Here are some minimalist decorating tips and ways to keep your home both cozy and clutter-free!

1. Choose a Warm Color Palette

When choosing paint and flooring colors, stick to warmer toned colors! You will be surprised at how much this will do to give your home a warmer feel. I feel like many people who come into minimalism tend to gravitate to a lot of grays and whites.

While these aren’t bad at all, try to use them as accents instead of main colors. For example, try choosing a warmer wall color such as white with a warm undertone. Also, wood flooring with gray undertones will give your home a colder feel. So if you happen to be switching up your flooring, keep this in mind!

Another way to add warm colors to your home is by incorporating a lot of wood. This can be flooring, furniture, and other décor items!

2. Add Throw Pillows & Blankets

Adding throw pillows and blankets simply give such a cozy feel to your home when done correctly. You can add a few throw pillows on your couch, a throw blanket on a chair, or even on your bed!

Some ways to keep this minimal is to stick to neutral throw pillows and blankets. Also, make sure you are adding just a few of these items on your couch chairs, or bed because too much can look like a cluttered mess! You want to add just a few to create a cozy, minimal vibe!

3. Use Candles

Another minimalist decorating tip for your home is to add some candles. A lot of candle jars are very pretty and it serves multiple purposes! Your home will be filled with the wonderful fragrance of the candle and give it a cozy, clean, and relaxed atmosphere. Candles are my favorite way to decorate as a minimalist!

Currently I’ve been loving this white sage candle because it makes my home smell so fresh and clean. It’s February currently as I write this and this scent just makes me feel like Spring is right around the corner!

4. Add Rugs

Another way to decorate your house while still keeping it minimal is to add some texture, like rugs! Rugs add texture and interest to your home without adding clutter because they actually serve a purpose! They lay on the floor and make your space cozy and less plain. This is also a great way to add a pop of color to your living space!

Places you can add rugs is your living room, hallways, the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms. Basically any room in your house! My favorite place to add a rug is a hallway, I guess it depends on your preference and layout of your home.

5. Have Plants

Adding plant is another great way to decorate your house. They fill up some space without creating clutter. Plants also help keep the air inside your home healthy and clean! Personally, I think I could use some more plants but I need to dedicate some time to keep them alive before I do so! I’m not going to lie I’m pretty bad when it comes to looking after plants. They look amazing though and have so many benefits!

6. Hang Some Art

When it comes to adding décor to your walls, try adding some art that you love. It can be minimal art or any type of art! Just avoid adding something to every corner of your walls to keep in minimalist. That being said, being a minimalist doesn’t mean your walls have to be completely bare, it’s all about balance!

Personally, I like to do a mix of some art and family photos on my walls. You can find plenty of art pieces that people have created over on Etsy.

7. Find a Balance

Speaking of balance…

The last point I wanted to touch on is the importance of finding balance. Minimalism doesn’t have to be all about owning as little as possible. It could be if that’s what you like and you don’t really care about having a cozy home. However, I don’t fall into that minimalist category. I still love having a cozy home, homemaking, and creating a space that not only I love, but that my family feels comfortable in!

Minimalism is all about cutting the clutter out of your life so that you can be more practical. This doesn’t mean you have to give up the things you love! It’s important that you find your own balance and ask yourself what you personally hope to get out of minimalism and a minimalist lifestyle.
