This crispy teriyaki tofu recipe is easy-to-follow AND budget friendly! If you didn’t know already, those are my kind of recipes. I love sharing recipes that I know your whole family can enjoy and that won’t break your budget or be too complicated. After a long day of work, running errands, and doing chores this girl is tiiireeedd. I know you can probably relate. So if you are looking for easy, budget friendly vegan recipes, you came to the right place!
Teriyaki chicken was one of my favorite meals growing up. I love the teriyaki flavor paired with some rice and broccoli. Of course, when I went vegan six years ago I stopped having it. After playing around with tofu recipes I discovered that tofu will absorb any flavor! It’s definitely all about the spices (and texture) when it comes to tofu. This teriyaki sauce gives the tofu such nice flavor, you won’t miss the chicken or beef!
How to Make the Crispy Teriyaki Tofu
For this recipe, you will need:
- 1 block of firm tofu
- 8 tbsp soy sauce (I used low sodium)
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tbsp neutral oil
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- sesame seeds for garnish
Steps
- Drain the tofu and press it to release some of the water. This works best when you freeze the tofu and then let it thaw out, but you can also let it sit out for a while to naturally release some of the water.
- Cut the tofu into 1/2 inch cubes.
- To make the teriyaki sauce/marinade, whisk all of the ingredients (excepts the oils) together.
- In a bowl, add the tofu cubes and pour the marinade into it and allow it to marinate for 10 min.
- Heat a large skillet and coat with the oils. Add the tofu to pan fry it until it gets crispy.
- Serve with steamed rice and veggies! You can also garnish with sesame seeds, if desired.
