Wondering how minimalism can save you money? Here are some obvious and maybe not so obvious ways how.

1. You Will Become More Intentional With Your Purchases
Going minimal doesn’t just mean decluttering all the time until you only have one of everything. It means paying attention to what you own, what you purchases, and why you purchase it. Sure, having less stuff is extremely beneficial, but also pay attention to what you keep and buy. Naturally, you will probably become more aware of this as you become more minimal and you will be very intentional with your purchases. You will start to notice what items/purchases are practical and which ones aren’t. This means you won’t shop sales just because it’s discounted or buy things out of boredom, which is fantastic news for your wallet!
2. Decreased Housing Costs
If you decide to live a minimalist lifestyle, you will probably decide to downsize your home, or buy a smaller home if you aren’t a home owner yet. You won’t need a large home with many bedrooms to decorate and furnish, and you will stick to something more practical instead. This means you will save money on your mortgage, which is the really big one here let’s be honest! Not only will you save money on your mortgage, but you will save money on all the other expenses that come with owning a home! This includes furniture, maintenance, utilities, and property taxes.
3. More Time for DIY
One of the fun ways minimalism can save you money is by allowing you more time to fix, re-purpose, and DIY things. Minimalism frees up time because you will have less things to preoccupy you. You will not spend as much time cleaning, shopping, organizing etc. because you will not have that many things to go through! If you also downsize your home, cleaning will be even faster! This means that you now have more time to make things yourself that you probably otherwise would have purchased. These things can include cleaners, such as a DIY All Purpose Cleaner, hand soap, and food related items like plant based milks! You also might consider fixing things that break, if possible because you have the time! Doing things yourself will always save you money in the long run.
4. You’ll Buy Less Stuff
This one might be an obvious one for many people, but some might think that as long as the implement the one in, one out rule that they are free to buy an unlimited amount of stuff! Of course, they are free to do so if they please, but that is not the point of minimalism. Minimalism includes decreasing the desire to buy more material things and being content with what you already have. This doesn’t mean you can’t buy or have things you like, it just means that you buy with the intention of getting full joy and use out of an item. The result is that you will buy less stuff and get full use of all your items! You will also realize that you don’t need duplicates of many items and become more practical in your buying decision making.
5. You’ll Make Money Selling Unused Items
This is one way I have personally found minimalism has saved, or made, me tons of extra money. This was more for when I first began minimalism and starting selling stuff I no longer had a need for. A huge category for me here was clothing, and I sold a bunch of it on Poshmark, a reselling app. I also had a few garage sales here and there, but for me reselling online was much easier and convenient!
6. You’ll Take Better Care of Your Items
This goes back to what I said before about being intentional about what you buy and own. Getting full use of your items means that you will better care for them and appreciate them, making them last longer so you will have to replace them less often. This goes for your car, clothing, furniture, and much more! Minimalism can save you money in all these areas because you will be replacing them less frequently, making you and your bank account happy!
