Decluttering Your Bedroom

You know how it goes, the clothes pile up on that one chair, you give up on making your bed each morning, and all your jewelry and beauty products end up all over your dresser.

Things easily get cluttered in your bedroom, especially when you just have TOO MUCH STUFF! I am here to tell you, you need to start decluttering! Honestly, the hardest part is the initial declutter. After that, maintaining is a breeze if you stay on top of it. I like to follow the one in, one out rule to make sure I don’t accumulate more than I need.

Tips to Declutter Your Bedroom

1. Start With Things Out in the Open

Okay, so if your bedroom is a total mess, you probably have a lot of things lying around on the floor, a chair, on/under your bed, or on dressers/tables. Either these items don’t have a home that you can store them in or you just haven’t gotten around to putting them away or washing laundry.

I suggest you start by going through all this stuff that isn’t put away. Make four separate piles (this applies to everything, even the stuff you will declutter later on):

  1. Donate
  2. Sell
  3. Keep
  4. Trash

There are always going to be things that should go to the trash or recycling. You can’t donate everything because some things might be broken or just plain worn out! Nobody wants your old t-shirts with armpit stains in them!

Once you go through all this stuff, deal with them accordingly depending on what pile they ended up in. For the stuff you decided to keep, make sure that they are all things you will continue to love and use. Also, make sure that they will have a “home” so you can store them properly.

If you have dirty laundry that needs to be dealt with, now would be a great time! You can also declutter some of these items as you go through some dirty laundry and declutter before/after washing.

If you don’t have one already, get a hamper or basket to keep all your dirty laundry in place. You can keep it in a corner or in your closet to keep things neat.

2. Go Through Your Closet/Wardrobe

Once you have dealt with the obvious things out in the open, it’s time to dive deeper. Remember, this is a deep decluttering session!

Next, go to your closet and go through your clothes, shoes. handbags, and accessories. Create the same piles as before. For now, we are just creating the piles, you can organize everything you keep back it’s place later!

When you are decluttering clothes or other items in your wardrobe, ask yourself:

  • How often do I wear this?
  • Does it fit me right?
  • How do I feel when I wear this?
  • Is it time to replace this item?
  • Is this my style?

All these questions will help you decide whether or not you should keep an item. Obviously, you want to only keep things you love and make you feel amazing! This way, you will keep reaching for them over and over again.

Also, go through your shoes and do the same thing. Personally, shoes were something I would hold on to for a long time. They were often the culprit of my cluttered bedroom! If your shoes are all over the floor, consider getting a shoe rack to keep them organized and off the ground.

If you like to wear a lot of jewelry (which isn’t a bad thing, btw!) consider getting a jewelry holder to keep everything organized and in one place.

3. Declutter Drawers

Now that your closet is out of the way, it’s time to declutter all your drawers, if you have any! It’s easy to stuff your drawers full of random crap when you do a quick “clean up” of your bedroom. You’re room may look clean on the outside, but your drawers are SO unorganized. Yes, I am also guilty of this.

This is a great time to go thorough other miscellaneous items, paper clutter, makeup etc. Again, create your piles and decide what you want to donate, sell, throw out, and keep. If you need to keep papers and documents in your bedroom for whatever reason, create a filing system and have a place for them, don’t just stuff them into random drawers. You can get a filing folder to stay organized and keep it in a drawer dedicated for your files and documents.

4. Organize Everything Back in it’s Place

Finally, you can get on to the fun part! Or at least I think it’s fun.

Once you have declutter your bedroom, you can organize what you’re keeping back in it’s place. Before you do so, you can wipe down surfaces, clean the floor, make your bed, do your laundry, or whatever else you need to do to clean your bedroom.

Now that you have less stuff and everything has it’s place, it will be a lot easier to clean from now on. Think about, you have less crap covering surfaces, less clothes to wash, and nothing covering your floors. Dusting, vacuuming, laundry, and organizing should be a breeze after this decluttering session!

Now you can relax and enjoy you mess-free, clutter-free, organized, minimalist bedroom.
