Declutter Your Kitchen

The kitchen is where I spend a lot of my time. I make most of our meals at home and I like to keep it relatively healthy, so I spend some extra time in the kitchen preparing healthy meals for my husband and I. Making meals at home also save us tons compared to when we used to eat out more often. We were newlyweds and just wanted enjoy going out to eat together!

Anyway, our kitchen is one of our favorite areas of our home, but it is also quite tiny! That being said, I had to learn to be a minimalist rather quickly because I couldn’t stand the look of a cluttered kitchen!

You are probably on the same boat if you are reading this. You want to have a clean, minimalist, clutter-free kitchen. Well, here is how you can start.

1. Start with Your Countertops

Your countertops and other open areas and surfaces in your kitchen are the most visible and obvious. They are the ones you are constantly looking at that look very cluttered when they are covered with stuff.

Start by decluttering these areas and surfaces. Make 4 separate piles for each category:

  1. Donate
  2. Sell
  3. Keep
  4. Toss

You may come across some items that just can’t be reused, so you are going to have to just toss it. If you can recycle anything, I would suggest you try to do so!

These 4 categories are relevant anytime you are decluttering any part of your home, so just make note of them.

If you have multiple appliances on your countertops, try to see if there are any you can store away out of sight. Also, if you have no more room for them other than your countertops, ask yourself if you really need it or not to decide whether you are going to keep or declutter it!

2. Go Through All Your Cupboards

Once you have gone through countertops and surfaces, it’s time to go through all of your cupboards and drawers. Take everything out and place in their corresponding categories. Also, your kitchen might look like a mess with piles all over but you are going to organize everything in the keep pile back in it’s place once you are all done! It will be so satisfying, trust me!

I would suggest getting rid of any duplicates you don’t really need. Like if you have way too many cups or plates, try to declutter some and keep only what you need for you and your family! This also makes doing the dishes a lot easier because they won’t pile up as much.

If you have any items that you don’t use because they are broken or a hassle to deal with, go ahead and declutter those items!

3. Fridge & Pantry

We can’t forget about actual food and pantry items! I like to go through these areas of my kitchen often just so that I’m aware of what I have and what I need to use up. If there are any expired items, make sure to toss those! If you find anything that you need to use up, you can create recipes to use that ingredient up. Just go through these areas and declutter any expired items or empty bottles or containers.

You can now organize everything in your keep pile back into the pantry and fridge. You can also take advantage of this time to wipe everything down and clean it before organizing your items back!

4. Under the Sink

If you keep cleaning supplies and products under the sink, don’t forget to go through this area as well. Personally, I keep a lot of my cleaning products under the sink and I know other people do too, so I just want to make sure I cover this area.

If you haven’t already, check out my Minimalist Cleaning Routine to see how I keep things simple when it comes to cleaning and minimal cleaning products I use to avoid clutter.

One way to keep your cleaning products organized to buy small storage baskets to keep everything in one place. This way you don’t have things scattered all over the place and you can keep all your cleaning supplies in the basket and carry it with you around your home no matter what area you are cleaning!
