My husband and I are basically experts when it comes to keeping it simple. We rarely get fancy for dates, and this includes occasions like Valentine’s day! We also currently live in California, so most of the state is currently shutdown due to the pandemic. This year, we really don’t have many options for going out even if we wanted to!

Whether you want to save money, stay home, or just simply keep it low-key for Valentine’s day this year, these 7 date/activity ideas will keep your Valentine’s day romantic and fun!

I am also sharing some simple minimalist gift ideas at the end in case you want to buy your partner a little something special that they will actually use and love!

1. Cook a Fancy Meal Together

Personally, I think there is something so romantic about being in the kitchen together. This Valentine’s day, cook a delicious fancy meal with your partner while listening to your favorite romantic love songs.

You can dim the lights, play some tunes, light some candles, and have a romantic candlelit dinner. If you feel like taking it a step further, you can even make a decadent dessert for after dinner!

2. Have a Movie Night with Snacks

Okay, I know this might sound boring to some of you, but I’m sure to others it’s an ideal night! I know it is for us!

We love just relaxing and snuggling up on the couch with a good movie and some snacks. To make it slightly more exciting, you can choose a new movie that you both haven’t seen yet. You can also make or buy snacks that aren’t what you usually have to make it more special!

3. Game Night

If you enjoy playing board and card games, then you and your partner can have a fun game night on Valentine’s day. You can play your favorite traditional board games OR create your own games.

Some fun romantic games for couples are:

  • Intimacy – this game is one of romantic questions that will help you get to know your partner better and probably also spice things up!
  • Talk, Flirt, Dare! – this game is similar to intimacy, but includes other fun aspects such as dares.
  • Dare Duel – I like this game because it can really become whatever you want it to be! It can become spicy and romantic or just plain funny!

4. Go For a Hike

If you and your partner are the outdoorsy type, going on a hike could be the perfect date. Not only do you get to go out of the house, but you get some exercise and spend great quality time with each other.

Hiking is a great activity to do on Valentine’s day if the weather is appropriate, it’s something my husband and I have done a few times and I would like to do it more! It’s also great because you can do this as a daytime activity and still do something else in the evening!

5. Chocolate & Wine Night

I don’t know about you, but chocolate and wine are two of my favorites things in the world, together and by themselves! If you want to keep things really simple, enjoy some chocolate and wine after dinner while enjoying great conversation and each other’s presence.

6. Make Art

If you guys are the artsy type of couple, then have an art night! You can play your favorite tunes, enjoy some wine and chocolate, and create art! Whether it’s painting, crafting, or anything else, you can have a fun minimalist Valentine’s day at home by having an art night.

7. Slow Dance

Another romantic thing you could do on Valentine’s day is play your favorite songs and slow dance. This could be your wedding song or just any song that you both love and makes you think of each other.

I think that slow dancing along with wine and chocolate would make such a perfect romantic night in!

Minimalist Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

  • Chocolate – Okay I know I mentioned chocolate A LOT but it’s such a perfect Valentine’s day gift that anyone (that likes chocolate of course) would love! It’s a perfect minimalist gift because it’s a consumable and you won’t have to worry about them not using and getting something useless.
  • Wine/Beer- A wine and/or beer basket is another great gift for him/her! My husband sure loves his beer and I know that he’d enjoy a craft beer basket as a gift!
  • Spa Day- Gift him or her with a relaxing day at the spa! I got this for Valentine’s day last year and honestly it’s the best gift ever. I love getting massages and if you know this is something your partner would enjoy, go for it and get them a gift certificate to the spa! If your local spas are not open yet (writing this is 2021 here!) then create a spa at home for them and offer to give them a massage!
  • Undergarments- Underwear also makes a great gift for Valentine’s day. Everyone needs underwear so it’s the perfect minimalist gift!
  • Gift Basket– Who doesn’t like a gift basket? Get your partner a gift basket filled with chocolate, snacks, and other goodies they can eat or use!

As for my husband and myself, we will probably do 1,2, and 5 on this list! I hope you have a happy and fun minimalist Valentine’s Day!

Denise XOXO
