Minimalist Wardrobe Essentials You Need To Have

Building a minimalist wardrobe isn’t always as easy as many people claim it to be. It’s hard choosing what you need to let go of, finding your style, and adding pieces that complement one another. If you are a minimalist and are in the process of curating a capsule wardrobe, here are some minimalist wardrobe essentials you need to have.

Before I became a minimalist, I have a closet full of clothes with absolutely nothing to wear. Something tells me I am not alone in this. Many of my friends and other people I now usually complain of having nothing to wear even though their closet is jam packed with clothes. The problem is having way too many clothes that just aren’t your style. They either don’t fit, don’t flatter you, or aren’t quality material. Once I decluttered my entire closet, I decided to start building my minimalist wardrobe. I soon learned that it’s really all about those basics and essentials. Here are some minimalist wardrobe essentials you need to have for a put together, well curated minimalist wardrobe.

1. Undergarments

Most blogs I’ve read regarding capsule wardrobe never really mention undergarments. It makes sense I guess, as that’s something that isn’t really seen by other people. However, ensuring that you have the proper undergarments that fit you properly is key to making sure every other piece of clothing you wear looks flattering.

Personally, I own 3 bras and 10 pairs of underwear. This is just what I currently have but I don’t really focus on numbers. It’s just what has been working for me at the moment and all I really need. All my undergarments are seamless/wireless, making them unnoticeable under my clothing. Here is what I own currently:

2. Tank Tops/Bodysuits

The second thing on my list of minimalist wardrobe essentials is tank tops and/or bodysuits. Personally, I prefer bodysuits because I usually tuck all my shirts in anyway. I also love the fitted look of a bodysuit since I am pretty petite. Tank tops and bodysuits are perfect for layering or even wearing on their own if the weather is warmer. I love the look of a simple bodysuit, jeans, and dainty jewelry. This looks is so minimalist yet classic! Here are some high quality bodysuits or tank tops to add to your wardrobe:

3. Plain T-Shirts

Another thing you need to have in your minimalist wardrobe is plain neutral t-shirts. Like tanks and bodysuits, they are great for layering or wearing on their own. I have 3 t-shirts currently: one in black, one in white, and one in sand/tan color. Because I am a t-shirt and jeans kind of gal, I love wearing them on their own with some jewelry. However, I love layering other pieces over them when the weather is colder!

4. Everyday Jeans

A good pair of jeans can really make a different in a simple outfit! Usually, my jeans is where I will actually splurge because I need a good pair that fits me well, is high quality, and that I can wear over and over again. You can easily dress jeans up or down depending on accessories and shoes! Currently, my go-to pair of jeans are:

I will continue to rave about these jeans over and over again because never in my life have I had a pair of jeans fit me so well! They carry an ankle length size which ACTUALLY hits me at the ankle (this is very important since I am only 5’2!)

5. Every Day Shoes

Having a pair of every day shoes is another minimalist wardrobe essential you need to have when building a capsule wardrobe. You need a pair that fits your lifestyle and that you can wear with multiple outfits from your wardrobe. The type of shoe you go with all depends on your lifestyle. If you live a more casual lifestyle like me, you might choose sneakers as your everyday shoe. However, if you have a job that requires you to dress nicely, perhaps a pair of heels or flats might suit you better. Currently, my pair of everyday shoes are:

Usually during the colder months (fall and winter) I wear my Dr. Martens Chelsea boots a lot more, but because Spring is finally almost here and the weather has been sunny, I’ve been wearing my white sneakers more often!
