I don’t know about you, but sourdough bread is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to my favorite types of bread. I love it for sandwiches or just plain toast! But french toast? Yup! I wanted to create a simple yet delicious egg-free, vegan sourdough french toast recipe and voila! Here you guys have it.

I am very much of an oats girl when it comes to breakfast and I think many vegans can relate. I mean, it’s so easy, healthy, and delicious. However, sometimes you just got to switch things up a little. This vegan sourdough french toast recipe is the perfect way to switch it up! It’s perfect for breakfast or brunch, whichever you prefer!

How to Make The Vegan Sourdough French Toast

For any type of french toast, you want to make sure that you do not use soft regular bread. Instead, you want to opt for stiff, sturdier bread such as brioche or any somewhat stale bread. This is why sourdough bread makes a perfect choice! Plus, you get a ton of texture and flavors of sweet and sour and it just takes it to a whole new level.

For this recipe you will need:

  • Thick sliced sourdough bread
  • Full Fat Coconut Milk
  • Cornstarch
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Brown Sugar
  • Maple Syrup
  • Butter for grilling

Start by making your vegan egg-free batter by whisking together all of the ingredients excluding the butter and maple syrup (and bread of course!). The cornstarch allows it to thicken up a little since you aren’t using eggs. Take your sourdough bread and dip it into the batter, coating both sides and transfer to a pan coated with the butter. Do this with all your slices of bread and cook each side until golden brown. Once done, transfer to serving plate and top with maple syrup or your favorite toppings!

I like to top my french toast with berries and a little bit of maple syrup, but you can top it with whatever you like! I don’t include powdered sugar in this recipe, but feel free to add it if you’d like.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 Slices Sourdough Bread
  • 1 C. Full Fat Coconut Milk canned, shaken
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 Tbsp. Cornstarch
  • 1/2 Tbsp. Brown Sugar optional
  • 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon ground
  • 1/2 tbsp. Vegan Butter for grilling

Instructions
 

  • In a medium bowl, whisk all the ingredients together,except for the maple syrup and butter, to make the batter.
  • Place a pan over medium heat and add butter to coat it
  • Take your sourdough bread and coat each slice in the batter, then transfer to the pan to grill
  • Cook each side about 1 min., or until golden brown
  • Serve with maple syrup or any of your favorite toppings!
